TECHNIQUE: Playing A Low Shot In Windy Conditions

Posted on: May 27th, 2011 by nathan No Comments
Mark Moore PGA Professional
at Leeds Golf Centre

At the time of posting the weather has been pretty windy – the 2011 Wentworth PGA event experienced some pretty mixed conditions and here at Leeds Golf Centre we noticed that people seem to play in rain and colder conditions, but windy days tend to be a bit quieter. But with a bit of good technique you can play a good low shot and enjoy a good round of golf.

So we asked our new Academy PGA Professional Mark Moore for bit of advice on how to play a good low shot for these conditions – he says there are a few mistakes that lots of people make and offered a few thoughts on how to make it right. So in his refreshingly no-nonsense style, Mark suggests the following in simple bullet points:

Firstly, we’ll look at the wrong method which causes too much back spin making the ball arc up and stall in the air:

  • ball too set back in stance (first photo in sequence)
  • too much wrist-cock (second photo in sequence)
  • weight too far forward
  • hitting down too hard
To correct this he suggests the following which results in a much straighter penetrating flight:
  • select a higher club (in the photos Mark switched from 6 to a 5 – middle photo)
  • keep ball position normal (fourth photo in sequence)
  • sleight weight on front foot
  • less wrist-cock (last photo in sequence)
  • sweep the ball – DO NOT DIG… Mark actually uses the phrase “In the breeze swing with ease”*
*please note, I am reliably informed by Bill Ferguson that this quote has been plagiarised from Bill Ferguson, PGA Master Professional who is also part of the Academy at Leeds Golf Centre!

COURSE REPORT: Week Commencing 30 May 2011

Posted on: May 27th, 2011 by nathan No Comments

Below is this weeks course report and work schedule for Leeds Golf Centre from Brian Carr, Head Green Keeper.

“This week, provided it is not too wet or windy, we will carry on with the application of herbicide to the fairways to treat the unsightly weed infestation once done this will improve the look and playability of the fairways.

We will also start to topdress the tees – this will be done using a 50/50 root zone mix, which half soil/peat and half sand, and we will be applying 1.2 tonnes per tee.

Also this week we will demoing a “turf man” – a machine that will help smooth the greens and speed them up without causing stress to the playing surface. It will be used in conjunction with a “barrel roller”. I am sure these two new pieces of equipment will improve the greens no end.

Once again, I hope that members and visitors alike are happy with the improvement on and off the course. Thanks for you co-operation as we carry out our work.”
