COURSE REPORT: Week Commencing 27 June 2011

Posted on: June 27th, 2011 by nathan No Comments

After a scorching weekend, Brian Carr, Head Green Keeper at Leeds Golf Centre, brings us this weeks course news:

“The club has now purchased a turf iron for the greens (see photo) which will help to improve the greens by making them roll smoother and faster. this will also allow us to keep the height of cut to 4mm without stressing the playing surface.

New rakes have been put in the bunkers as well as new tee markers and discs on the tees. We would ask that all players remember to put broken tees into the new tee caddies too.

Last week saw the collars and rough fertilised, which will improve and enhance the course especially around the greens. Hopefully this week we will start to spray the tees, semi-rough and the Oaks course’ fairways with herbicide to kill off any weeds.

Once again thanks for your co-operation whilst we go about our work.”

Quadruple Whammy as Wike Ridge Win!

Posted on: June 20th, 2011 by nathan No Comments

Thursday 16 June 2011

Roger Roper, Will Shucksmith, Nigel Sweet & Dean Wright

In an historic quadruple, Wike Ridge Golf Club (Leeds Golf Centre) have not only won the 1st Division Leeds and District team championship at Wakefield Woodthorpe Golf Club, but they have have now won it for a record five straight years! On top of this Nigel Sweet, Operations Manager at Leeds Golf Centre, took the 36-hole individual title, known as the Swithinbank Trophy which is the oldest trophy in the Leeds & District Union and did it in style equaling the course record (67 and 5 under par).

The Wike Ridge team, Roger Roper, Dean Wright, Will Shucksmith and Nigel Sweet, had pushed into the lead by 4 shots after the first 18 holes. The second 18 however saw a surge from Selby Golf Club who took it too the wire but Wike Ridge held their nerve to win by the narrowest 1 shot margin.

Dean Wright backed up this impressive form especially in the afternoon coming in 1-under at 71. But the day’s star player was Nigel Sweet who’s first round score of 67 equaled the course record at 5 under par and set the team up for the day with 6 birdies in the morning alone. This saw Nigel secure the Swithinbank Trophy.

COURSE REPORT: Week Commencing 20 June 2011

Brian Carr, Head Green Keeper at Leeds Golf Centre, gives us this weeks course news:

“Last week saw two new additions to the Green Staff – Lewis Giedhill and Joseph Cavanagh have joined us as apprentices.

Starting this week we will be starting to topdress the green surrounds and approaches and then we will be fertilizing these areas which will really help improve the turf even more.

The welcome rain we received last Sunday (15mm no less!) has helped to freshen up the course and bring the greens on a even more. I now feel we are nearly at our best with the greens. We have just heard that the purchase of the green iron has been confirmed which is great and will see the quality of the greens go up another level again.”

Get Re-Gripped While You Wait at 25% Off – Black Widow day 23 June 2011

Posted on: June 15th, 2011 by nathan No Comments

HUGE SAVINGS ON BLACK WIDOW GRIPS AND CLEATS AND SAVE OVER 25%

On 23 June, for one day only we will have a Black Widow tent at Leeds Golf Centre offering a while-you-wait re-gripping service at the following awesome prices:

  • 9 irons re-gripped for just £40 (normally £54)
  • Individual driver or putter just £4.50 (normally £6)
  • New cleats fitted on your shoes just £7.50 (normally £10)

We asked our Academy Pro Mark Moore about the effect of using and incorrect or worn grip:

  • Grip too small – will cause a ‘strong’ grip, which can lead to a hook
  • Grip too large – makes it hard to get your top hand over the grip, often resulting in an ‘open’ face at impact and a slice
  • Your grip will wear quicker if it is the wrong size as you are forced to grip too tight or from the friction of your hands moving on the grip during the swing
  • Playing with a club that has lost it’s grip will make you grip too tight which can restrict your movement especially as you hinge and release.

So come on down and get a grip on the situation!
