Leeds Golf Centre grabs YMG Junior Golf Academy status

| YMG Junior Golf |
Youngsters keen to try their hand at golf can now look forward to the very best introduction to the game as Leeds Golf Centre has become a YMG Junior Golf Academy.
YMG is the first-ever structured educational syllabus designed to not only introduce boys and girls to the game of golf, but also help them develop the skills and knowledge of the game that will keep them interested and motivated long enough for the golf bug to bite.

Leeds Golf Centre is delighted to become one of around only 300 clubs nationwide to be accredited with YMG Junior Golf Academy status, as Head PGA Professional and Academy Manager, Andy Herridge explains
“We’re all very excited to have become a YMG Academy because it means we can now offer children the fabulous YMG programme, which, alongside coaching youngsters in how to play the game, also teaches the rules and etiquette through exciting activities, fun challenges and mini-competitions to ensure that the whole golfing experience is about having fun.
Youngsters joining a YMG Academy receive a comprehensive manual, which puts as much emphasis on the rules and etiquette as it does on playing the game, and there are five levels to work through, each comprising an 8-week course of one-hour lessons.
The extremely attractive and carefully assembled manual enables youngsters to see what’s in store, week-by-week for each of the 9 levels (Cadets, Cadets 2, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Master 1-4) and each level is marked by a series of fun skills and knowledge challenges which the children complete to move on the next level.
“We will be starting our first YMG Cadets course – the first stage of the YMG programme – in September and we already have quite a few youngsters interested in joining the classes, but we’ll always make room for more,” says Andy. We will also be holding free taster sessions every month to give everyone the opportunity to experience golf first hand.
The cost will be £80 per term (8 weeks) and if you would like to register your interest in a YMG Cadets course at Leeds Golf Centre, call the PGA Professional team on 0113 288 6000, or call in at Leeds Golf Centre, which is located at Shadwell, Leeds, just off the A59 between Leeds and Harrogate.

Since announcing the development of the new conservatory / extended bar area with viewing deck and Academy video teaching bays, work has been moving steadily forward and are still on schedule for an early September completion. We thought you might like to see some of the progress.
VIEWING DECK AND BETTER 19th HOLE
LANDSCAPING IN THE CAR PARK
“The much welcomed rain last week [editor: from a greenkeepers point of view] – a total of 27mm help to bring the course on, especially the green tees and fairways after we had fertilised these areas. In fact the green tees and fairways have shown a remarkable improvement this year and will continue to do so in the future. All of the aeration work we do on these areas is now paying dividends and is leading to a better turf cover and turf sward (density) of turf.
A new tee on the 10th hole on the Oaks course has now been constructed and turf layed – this will come in to play in the next week or so.
This week will see the greens staff continuing to work on the greens which will take the form of sorrel rolling and using the turf iron. These two forms of turf management are now becoming weekly turf maintenance verticutting and scarifying.
Thank you for your patience as we do carry out work on the greens – it is essential and benefits all golfers and the long-term of the course.”
Brian Carr, Head Greenkeeper.

For those who aren’t familiar with life around a golf club you might be interested to know how much charity fund raising goes on – a week doesn’t go by without one of our generous sections doesn’t have a raffle or some activity going on. In addition to this year’s Captains’ Day which raised over £1000, here’s a round up of recent charitable activities by the magnificent people that can be found around Leeds Golf Centre.
PAR 3 CLUB RAISE £300 FOR HELP FOR HEROES
If you have been to Leeds Golf Centre on a Thursday morning you may have noticed The Oaks course being very busy – this is thanks to the Par 3 Club who play a weekly comp at Leeds Golf Centre. On 30th June, no fewer than 42 members competed at its Help For Heroes Charity Match.
All players received pens and there were medals for the Shirley Etherington and Peter Sharp (Ladies’ and Men’s winners) which were donated by the Royal British Legion as well as balls from Steve Atkinson of Srixon and polo shirts from the Pro Shop at Leeds Golf Centre. Colin Asher, Chairman of the Par 3 Club who provided the information for this report, said “Thanks are due to them (prize donors) and members who contributed so generously to the wealth of raffle prizes. A total of £300 was raised”.
The Par 3 Club also donated £50 to the fund (see below).
LEEDS GOLF CENTRE ACADEMY GIVE LESSONS FOR CHARITY
On Sunday 10 July, the PGA Pros at our Academy did lessons to help raise funds and awareness for the Sadie Rose Clifford Appeal - a heart-breaking story of a baby with a rare form of cancer. Donations clocked up £120, plus the £50 kindly contributed by the Par 3 Club.
WIKE RIDGE VETERANS SECTION TO RAISE FUNDS FOR MARTIN HOUSE
On 20th June, the Veterans played their Open Charity Challenge which was run by Tony Pillar with Denis fox as runner-up, raising £275 for Martin House in the process.
They will be staging a similar event in aid of St Gemma’s Hospice in September and playing for the John Gray Memorial Claret jug. David Hedd, Chairman and competition organiser, offered his “thanks for all who supported the day’s events and provided raffle prizes”.
Needless to say we are delighted to be home to a golf club with such generous members, it is something we admire and encourage. If you have any charity event reports from activities at Leeds Golf Centre, please email us and we will add you to this, or future round-ups as necessary.
