First Tee Tensions? Quit Worrying!

Posted on: July 8th, 2011 by nathan No Comments

Mark Moore one of our resident PGA Professionals at the Leeds Golf Centre Academy offers the following advice on 1st tee jitters and if you like what you read, then you might want to check out Mark’s FREE lesson offer here.

Do you tense up at the first tee?
Most people that I have met are relaxed on the range and anxious on the first tee – anxiety obviously has a negative effect on performance. You simply need to focus on a positive to allay the negative.

So how do you focus on the task at hand?
A simple tip to focus the mind and remove negative thoughts is to concentrate on just one simple task – a good example is to try to hit the tee peg.

Drill:
  1. Place 10 tee pegs in a line on the ground a couple of inches apart from each other (image 1).
  2. Make smooth swings trying to hit the tee peg but not hit the ground (image 2).
  3. When you can hit all 10 tee pegs in a row you are ready…

Once you are at the first tee take care to pick your line and have a good pre-shot routine, then when it is time for the shot focus purely on the tee peg. Whilst clipping the tee peg doesn’t guarantee a good shot, it will allow you to get the ball away and it means that you are focusing on something positive rather than worrying (image 3).

Get Re-Gripped While You Wait at 25% Off – Black Widow day 23 June 2011

Posted on: June 15th, 2011 by nathan No Comments

HUGE SAVINGS ON BLACK WIDOW GRIPS AND CLEATS AND SAVE OVER 25%

On 23 June, for one day only we will have a Black Widow tent at Leeds Golf Centre offering a while-you-wait re-gripping service at the following awesome prices:

  • 9 irons re-gripped for just £40 (normally £54)
  • Individual driver or putter just £4.50 (normally £6)
  • New cleats fitted on your shoes just £7.50 (normally £10)

We asked our Academy Pro Mark Moore about the effect of using and incorrect or worn grip:

  • Grip too small – will cause a ‘strong’ grip, which can lead to a hook
  • Grip too large – makes it hard to get your top hand over the grip, often resulting in an ‘open’ face at impact and a slice
  • Your grip will wear quicker if it is the wrong size as you are forced to grip too tight or from the friction of your hands moving on the grip during the swing
  • Playing with a club that has lost it’s grip will make you grip too tight which can restrict your movement especially as you hinge and release.

So come on down and get a grip on the situation!

TECHNIQUE: Playing A Low Shot In Windy Conditions

At the time of posting the weather has been pretty windy – the 2011 Wentworth PGA event experienced some pretty mixed conditions and here at Leeds Golf Centre we noticed that people seem to play in rain and colder conditions, but windy days tend to be a bit quieter. But with a bit of good technique you can play a good low shot and enjoy a good round of golf.

So we asked our new Academy PGA Professional Mark Moore for bit of advice on how to play a good low shot for these conditions – he says there are a few mistakes that lots of people make and offered a few thoughts on how to make it right. So in his refreshingly no-nonsense style, Mark suggests the following in simple bullet points:

Firstly, we’ll look at the wrong method which causes too much back spin making the ball arc up and stall in the air:

    • ball too set back in stance (first photo in sequence)
    • too much wrist-cock (second photo in sequence)
    • weight too far forward
    • hitting down too hard
To correct this he suggests the following which results in a much straighter penetrating flight:
    • select a higher club (in the photos Mark switched from 6 to a 5 – middle photo)
    • keep ball position normal (fourth photo in sequence)
    • sleight weight on front foot
    • less wrist-cock (last photo in sequence)
    • sweep the ball – DO NOT DIG… Mark actually uses the phrase “In the breeze swing with ease”*
