COURSE REPORT 13/05/2013

Well, it’s definitely warmer and also we are experiencing a intermittent rain it’s exactly what the courses need to really kick-start growth on the greens. Brian, our head green keeper, keeps us in the loop with course progress in his weekly course report:

“Soil temperature are finally up which means that we should see some noticeable growth on the greens and with a little more top dressing happening this week we should be back to the high standards that we set last season. Then we will set the bar higher!”

“Also this week we will finish off the work in the new chipping mats on the members’ practice chipping area outside the clubhouse.”

“Coming into action for is first full weeks service is the new zero-turn mower that we mentioned in last week’s report – we will begin to cut in around the trees and make real progress with the semi-rough.”

“Finally, and sadly, the time has come to wish ‘bon-voyage’ to Paul Ellis, our deputy head greenkeeper, who will be heading to new pastures (or fairways). Paul leaves us after 8-years of dedicated service. May I, on behalf of everyone at Leeds Golf Centre, take this opportunity to wish him the very best for the future.”

The snow seems like a distant memory when the sun is shining like it has done over the weekend! But whilst the hot dry weather is great for golf, a little rain wouldn’t go amiss. The hard-work on the weather-delayed greens preparation continues and Brian tells of the latest equipment arrival to bolster his armoury!

This weeks photo shows the new bunker on the 6th.

“The forecast looks bright which should allow the greens team to top dress the greens again with approximately 3/4 tonne of sand. This will help smooth out the playing surface more and move us further along to the end goal of some great quality playing surfaces.”

“We will also begin to over-seed any newly cultivated areas that are prone to wear around the course and, hopefully with the right growing conditions, it will start to fill out into the great golf course that the re-development work, investment in new maintenance equipment and hard-work have brought around.”

Last week we took delivery of a new piece of equipment too – this is beneficial to you and exciting for us! It is a ‘zero-turn’ mower called a Hustler which allows us to closely mow around the plantations and tricky areas and will really aid us in our course presentation.”

COURSE REPORT 22/04/2013

It’s not all big machines making big changes in green keeping – this week in Brian Carr’s green report we get a little glimpse into some of the strategy and detail that goes into their work schedule and planning.

NB This weeks photos shows the new signage installed recently (to the right), with colour coded pin-position information, and some of the new planting that has been going on around the course (below).

“We can now say with confidence that the weather has improved! This means soil temperatures are rising and we can now start to look at top dressing the greens which we are aiming to have completed this week. This year we will be using pure sand as supposed to previous seasons where we have been gradually reducing the soil content in the mix – this enable the top dressing to be incorporated into the playing surfaces.”

“We should also see the new bunkers on the 2nd and 6th holes completed by the contractors with the remaining bunker work to be completed during the off-season.”

Last Friday saw the departure of one of a greens staff, James Naylor – he has taken up a post at Philadelphia Point Golf Club in the USA. So with a friendly tinge of envy we wish him our congratulations and wish him all the best for the future from everybody at Leeds Golf Centre. Good news too as last week Joe Cavanagh, one of our young apprentices, completed his NVQ Level 2 in green keeping – so a bit ‘well done’ from the team!”

COURSE REPORT 15/04/2013

We don’t want to tempt fate but it really does look like the golf season really is starting and there is even a theory that the current winds that we are experiencing have been caused by green keepers throughout the UK collectively breathing a sigh of relief! This week, Brian Carr brings us good news in his course report: -

“At last spring has finally sprung! With both day and night time temperatures on the up, it looks like an end to the prolonged cold weather of the past few months!”

“Of course, this means the soil temperatures are now also beginning to rise and on Friday they reached 8c – that’s just short of the magic 10c that we need so that the grass really begins to grow and respond to all the hard work and preparation that has taken place over the past 8 months.”

The weak ahead will see more work taking place on the 2nd and 5th greens on the Wike Ridge course and we do hope to have these greens in play towards the weekend. Those playing this week will likely see contractors on course who will be reshaping and adding some new bunkers around the 2nd (see photo to the left) and 6th greens.”

Wellingtons @ Wike opens at Leeds Golf Centre

Posted on: April 9th, 2013 by nathan No Comments

The latest in a series of announcements that includes the opening of its new Wike Ridge course and its selection as the UK headquarters of The Leadbetter Golf Academy, Leeds Golf Centre has yesterday witnessed the opening of its new clubhouse restaurant and bar, Wellingtons@Wike.

Owned and operated by husband and wife team, Matthew and Helen Streets, Wellingtons@Wike brings a homely and professional feel to the food, beverages and customer service at Leeds Golf Centre’s impressively refurbished restaurant space. Wellingtons@Wike – the first venture since the successful launch of Wellingtons of Wetherby in 2011 – will be managed by newly appointed general manager, Susanne Devanny, who joins the team following a successful career in high quality catering establishments across Leeds city centre.

Helen and Matthew Streets have spent their entire working lives in the food industry. Helen is a highly acclaimed pastry chef, working in high quality establishments throughout her career including Michelin-starred 21 Queen Street and the famous Sharrow Bay in the Lake District. Matthew has developed a career in the supply and distribution of food and has also had golf management experience, therefore providing a mix of skills that will be an asset in providing members and guests with a great food and beverage experience.

Commenting on the opening, Matthew Streets said: “We are delighted and excited to launch our newest venture at Leeds Golf Centre, the home of modern golf. We will be concentrating on high levels of customer service, providing beautifully fresh home cooked food to golf club members and visitors as well as North Leeds residents from 8am until late. Helen’s incredible home-made cakes will also be taking pride of place in the restaurant and this is sure to attract a loyal following entirely on its own!”

Nigel Sweet, Leeds Golf Centre’s Operations Manager, added: “We’ve had a fantastic start to 2013 with a number of unique and exciting announcements, so we’re naturally delighted to make another and welcome Matthew and Helen to Leeds Golf Centre. UK HOME OF THE LEADBETTER ACADEMY!

Posted on: April 3rd, 2013 by nathan No Comments

In case you missed our recent news, Leeds Golf Centre has officially been selected as the UK headquarters of the world-beating David Leadbetter Golf Academy – not only a coup for us here at the club but a fantastic endorsement for golf in Leeds and the wider Yorkshire region!

Internationally recognised as one of the world’s best golf coaches and often referred to as ‘the man responsible for inventing the golf tuition industry’, David Leadbetter has worked with students such as Nick Faldo, Nick Price, Ernie Els and Greg Norman. David’s philosophy and expertise has therefore now arrived at Leeds Golf Centre, where its Academy professionals – under the instruction of new Head Professional and Leadbetter Golf Academy Manager, Chris Parker – will train in the Leadbetter method before being accredited to teach it.

Selecting Leeds Golf Centre as The Leadbetter Golf Academy’s UK base following critical acclaim for its facilities and overall proposition, David Leadbetter said: “I am delighted to begin what I know will be an exciting academy at Leeds Golf Centre. The area around Leeds is rich in golfing heritage and has a fine tradition of great players. This fact, coupled with the fantastic redevelopment of Leeds Golf Centre in recent years, means that there could be only one venue for us to create a really special golf academy. Our values and those of Leeds Golf Centre match up very well and we are looking forward to putting top instruction on the map in Leeds.”

The Leadbetter Golf Academy offers world-class golf instruction in over 25 international locations, spanning Europe, the USA and Asia. Lessons are underway at LGC and with demand expected to be significant, early booking is advised – call 0113 288 6000 to make your appointment and experience the world’s best tuition first-hand.

EASTER CAMP & PRO TIP BY JOSH HIRST

Posted on: April 3rd, 2013 by nathan No Comments

Commencing the second half of his ‘top tips’ series, Josh Hirst lauds an approach to ball striking that essentially disregards the golf ball – despite sounding unusual, it’s apparently one of the golden rules! Also featured is Josh’s forthcoming Easter camp for juniors – childcare with benefits!

According to Josh, who is gaining notoriety as one of the region’s best and most dedicated junior coaches, golfers of all ages often make the mistake of trying to ‘hit’ the ball. “It’s much better to focus on swinging the club through the ball to a picturesque finish – let your golf club worry about moving the ball,” says Leeds Golf Centre’s Junior Academy Manager and Level2 PGA Professional.

Top tip: To better understand this principle, set the club around 3 inches behind the ball at address and simply keep the club working ‘on path’ all the way through the impact zone.

Junior golf camp starts Monday 8th April

Following this week’s Lee Westwood Junior Camp, Leeds Golf Centre will be running its own version next week. Sticking very much to the successful recipe developed by Josh as a result of his considerable experience in this area, the LGC junior camp will run from Monday 8th April to Thursday 11th April 2013 inclusive.

Josh is totally committed to creating a fun and relaxed environment where juniors can learn fundamental skills and progress their interest in the game. Crucially, this happens in small sub-groups with others of comparable experience and ability – meaning that the intimidation and demoralisation of seeing others consistently hitting the ball straighter and further is engineered out of the process.

  • Monday 8th April to Thursday 11th April 2013
  • Sessions run from 10am until 4pm
  • Welcome pack on arrival
  • Cost is £100pp for the week or £30pp each day
  • Lunch included

For further information or to book a slot in Josh’s Easter camp – or indeed a private lesson – email josh@leedsgolfcentre.com, call 0113 288 6000 or visit the Pro Shop where one of our team members will be happy to help.
