You may not realise it but wandering the greens & fairways of Leeds Golf Centre is the veritable living legend of golf Bill Ferguson; awarded the status of PGA Master Professional – an honorary status of which there are just 32 in the world. Bill has contributed so much to the game over the years – from coaching Colin Montgomery through, and indeed before, his glory days, to successful Ryder Cup teams. Yet, despite his time spent at the top of the game, he still loves nothing more than helping all golfers enjoy the game as much as he does.
We thought we’d ask Bill a few quick questions and he deftly flipped our questions on their head but in doing so he still answered them!
Firstly, what are the 3 most annoying questions you get asked by golfers?
Question 1. Can I book lesson a lesson with you? BUT do not change my grip!
Question 2. Why am I not improving?
Question 3. Why don’t I ever hole any 30-40 foot putt?
Can you answer them please? That way you might get asked them a bit less often!
Answer 1. Of course you can have a lesson with me, but I can’t make any guarantees about your grip. All the best golfers in the world grip the club properly; it really is the best way to get the club face square when striking the ball.
Answer 2. I’d answer with a question of my own: How much practice are you doing? You need to practice and then you will be able to hit better “bad shots”!
Answer 3. It’s not your putting that’s at fault, it’s your iron shots! I refer you back to back to answer number 2!
If you could only give club golfers one bit of advice, what would it be?
It’s simple really – improve your grip!
Do you have any competition plans for this season?
I’ll do some like the Super 60s Tournament and one or two select others.
So if you are looking for some no-nonsense, straight talking expert golf coaching that has benefitted some of the world’s best players in recent years, Bill Ferguson is the man!
