The weather seems to be going from one extreme to the other these days. However, the location of Leeds Golf Centre combined with investments in greenkeeping equipment and course treatments (not to mention the skill of our superb greenkeeping team) has allowed us to remain open for play throughout the heaviest periods of rainfall – heck, we even managed to bring the summer tees back into play!
Brian Carr, our Head Greenkeeper, brings us his weekly run-down of recent activity and the plans for the near future: “The week before last was the wettest of the year with rainfall of 78mm. Typically for this time of year, that was followed by a ground frost at the end of the week – all of which forced us to bring the winter greens into play. This of course meant that we were one of the only clubs in the area managing to remain open whilst also allowing the main greens to dry out.”
“The week ahead will see us finishing the drainage at the side of the 18th water feature and begin to install a drain at the front of the 16th green – here’s hoping for some good weather to allow us to crack on unimpeded! We will also continue to use the shockwave machine on the fairways and walk-off areas around the course and plan to finish off spraying the worm repellent – but this really does require a few dry days without wind.
Other regular & additional work that we will be doing this week is:
- Watch mole hills & level as necessary
- De-stone bunkers
- Clear the lane of leaves and tidy-up
- Burn the timber from around the shed
- Continue pitch mark repairs
- De-plug the range
- Hand-cut greens”
