THE SUE RYDER CUP
Members, regulars and casual visitors are invited to take part in a fantastic day-long event at Leeds Golf Centre whilst raising funds for a very worthy cause. Taking place on Friday 17 August in support of Sue Ryder, a national charity that aids those with long-term or terminal illnesses, the day will consist of a 12-hole competition on The Oaks course followed by a family barbeque.
Entry into the competition and post-event barbeque is £17.50 for adults and £12.50 for children. Those wishing to enter can download an entry form here, indicating preferred tee-times (from midday) and catering arrangements. Completed entry forms should be returned to Leeds Golf Centre’s Pro Shop along with the relevant payment.
Please note, golf-only and barbeque-only entries and tickets are welcome for those that are unable to stay all day.
WEE WONDERS SET FOR BATTLE ON THE OAKS
After a great competition last year, Leeds Golf Centre is delighted to have been chosen to host the regional qualifying round of the Wee Wonders 2012 championship.
The road to the grand final at St Andrews starts on Tuesday 31 July with a large field of youngsters doing battle over The Oaks’ 12-hole par-3 course. The Wee Wonders championship is open to both boys and girls aged between 5 and 12 and costs just £8 per entry.
Built and maintained to the same exacting standard as the Wike Ridge Championship course, The Oaks provides excellent terrain for junior golfers with a great mix of holes and gently undulating greens that are sure to test competitors’ short game skills.
For general information, please visit the Wee Wonders website at www.weewondersgolf.com or click here to download an entry form.
NORTH OF ENGLAND GOLF TOUR AT LGC
After getting underway this week, The North of England Golf Tour will be visiting Leeds Golf Centre in the middle of September after several rounds on some of the region’s best courses.
The event – designed for male golfers in a European Tour-style ‘Order of Merit’ format – ends with a Grand Final for the top 10 in Cyprus next year with the overall winner receiving a superb prize to watch The Masters at Augusta National in April 2013.
Places at the second of 15 qualifying events on Monday 9 July – Pannal Golf Club on the outskirts of Harrogate – are still available. As Pannal is one of four ‘majors’, points received according to finishing position in the stableford event will count double towards Order of Merit totals.
Following the final qualifying event at the beautiful Pleasington Golf Club in Lancashire on October 1, the Order of Merit top-10 will be eligible to take their places in the Grand Final at Aphrodite Hills next January.
Full details are available via the organisers’ website at www.northerncountiesgolfer.co.uk.
WIKE RIDGE COURSE TO HOST YORKSHIRE PGA MATCHPLAY
In what is a tremendous honour for Leeds Golf Centre, the Yorkshire PGA next week hosts the last-16 round of its 2012 matchplay competition for professional golfers on the Wike Ridge Championship course.
The accolade – testament not only to the improving reputation and image of Leeds Golf Centre but also to the work that Brian Carr and his greenkeeping team undertook last year to improve course presentation and playability – was well received by the regional golfing community when it was announced early this year.
Spectators are encouraged to attend when the last-16 – including our own Head Professional and Academy Manager, Andy Herridge – do battle on Sunday 15 July from 3pm. Also at Leeds Golf Centre are the quarter finals (Wednesday 19 September) and both the semi-finals and final (Thursday 18 October).
WATCH THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP AT NINETEEN
Nineteen Bar & Grill will be screening full coverage of The Open Championship live from Royal Lytham when it commences on Thursday 19th July. Watch the drama unfold pre or post-golf – better still, bring the family down for lunch or dinner and emulate your favourite professional on the range!
Lloyd Holliday, Leeds Golf Centre’s retail manager, comments on his top three tips for success at Royal Lytham: “So how do we look past Tiger Woods? He’s already won three times this season – the only player on the US Tour to do so – but hasn’t produced the goods in a major for quite some time. It is a brave man that bets against him!”
“My outside money would go on a returning-to-form Padraig Harrington who’s looking more like the man of old. If he can just get the short stick working like it used to, he’s going to be close on Sunday afternoon. But I have to be patriotic and go with my heart rather than my brain and say Lee Westwood – I really hope it’s his time to shine!”
WIKE RIDGE GOLFERS VICTORIOUS YET AGAIN
Following recent epic victories by Wike Ridge Golf Club’s juniors and also Operations Manager, Nigel Sweet, the club is delighted to reveal that it is once again the Leeds & District Union’s First Division Team Champion for a record-breaking sixth straight season.
Emerging victorious at Selby Golf Club late last month – beating nearby Cookridge Halll by two shots – the team performed valiantly in (surprise, surprise!) adverse weather with Dean Wright (scratch) shooting the squads best round of 71.
Congratulations to the team (Nigel Sweet, Dean Wright, Steve East and Joe Bagshaw) from all at LGC.
