CAPTAINS DAY 2012 RESULTS

The sun shone for two very lucky Captains last weekend as 109 Tiger Cubs, Juniors, Ladies and Men competed for magnificent prizes and the four Captains Day trophies.

Huge thanks go to Brian Carr and his greenkeeping team who worked wonders with a few days’ good weather to ensure that the golf course was fit for the occasion. This sentiment was echoed by all that took part – especially the victors!

Special thanks go to Arlene Chambers who photographed the day. Photos will be added to our Facebook page very soon.

YORKSHIRE JUNIORS PLAY LGC

Leeds Golf Centre and its superb Wike Ridge course recently played host to the Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs’ Junior Team Championship finals.

Eight teams of three participated – each representing one of the district unions that form the Yorkshire Union – and playing a Stableford format in three-balls, the scene was set for an epic contest over the beautifully remodelled course. The eventual victors were Teesside District Union who will represent Yorkshire at the English Championships when it takes place at Woodhall Spa later this month.

Much praise was heaped on Leeds Golf Centre’s greenkeeping team – especially given the recent poor weather – and Nigel Sweet was cited by Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs’ President, Steven Larard, as an exemplar of amateur golf and a great role model for juniors.

Indeed, in a further endorsement, the Captain of Middlesbrough Golf Club has booked his annual away day right here at Leeds Golf Centre in recognition of just how impressed he was with the facility – great news indeed!

WATCH THE OPEN AT NINETEEN BAR & GRILL!

Nineteen Bar & Grill is now screening full coverage of The Open Championship live from Royal Lytham! Watch the drama unfold pre or post-golf – better still, bring the family down for lunch or dinner and emulate your favourite professional on the driving range!

Lloyd Holliday, Leeds Golf Centre’s retail manager, comments on his top three tips for success at Royal Lytham: “So how do we look past Tiger Woods? He’s already won three times this season – the only player on the US Tour to do so – but hasn’t produced the goods in a major for quite some time. It is a brave man that bets against him!”

“My outside money would go on a returning-to-form Padraig Harrington who’s looking more like the man of old. If he can just get the short stick working like it used to, he’s going to be close on Sunday afternoon. But I have to be patriotic and go with my heart rather than my brain and say Lee Westwood – I really hope it’s his time to shine!”

To book a table or make catering arrangements for a small group of golfers over the course of the Open Championship weekend, call Nineteen Bar & Grill’s general manager, Charlotte Mills, on 0113 288 6160.

UNIQUE OLYMPIC GOLF COMPETITION!

Make sure you save the date – Sunday 5th August – to join your club Captains and other fellow members us for a unique mixed event to celebrate the Olympic Games.

The non-qualifying Stableford competition will be played over 18 holes in mixed teams, each team representing a country. During the round, there will be five ‘activities’ to represent the five Olympic rings – but beware, they’ll either help or hinder scoring ability (without causing injury or embarrassment, of course)! Each player’s score will then count towards the overall ‘national’ score and the country accumulating most Stableford points will be declared the gold medal-winner!

Prizes will be on offer for the top three teams, with the presentation ceremony taking place immediately after the conclusion of play.

Intrigued? Keep an eye on the club noticeboards this week for the entry sheet – we look forward to seeing you on the day!
