WEE WONDERS DO BATTLE AT LGC
After a great competition last year, some of the UK’s best young golfers once again descended on Leeds Golf Centre this week in regional qualifying for the Wee Wonders 2012 championship.
Wee Wonders Open Golf Championships was founded in 1995 by Alasdair Good, Head PGA Professional at Gullane Golf Club in Scotland. Growing rapidly to become the only UK-wide tournament for children between the ages of 5 and 12, the event provides an opportunity for youngsters to compete regardless of their level of experience.
“Wee Wonders is now firmly established as one of the leading competitions of its type in the world. It offers talented young boys and girls the opportunity to compete and thrive in a series of well-organised events; players who participate in Wee Wonders will receive the grounding they need to go far in golf,” said Duncan Weir, Director of Golf Development at The R&A.
Leeds Golf Centre is proud to be selected as a regional qualifying venue for the second year running – its unique 12-hole par-3 course, The Oaks, providing the ideal quality of preparation and mixture of holes. With greens playing at the same speed as the Wike Ridge course, the specially-conceived 9-hole layout was sure to test competitors’ short game skills earlier this week.
Achieving excellent scoring, winners on the day were:
- George Roebuck (boys 11/12), level par
- Abigail Taylor (girls 11/12), 6-over par
- Oliver Abbott (boys 9/10), 2-over par
- Adel Watt (girls 9/10), 16-over par
- Niamh Rowley (girls 5/8), 30-over par (bless her!)
- Seb Cave (boys 7/8), 7-over par
- Luke Schmidt (boys 5/6), 7-over par
Qualifiers now turn their attentions to the Grand Final at St Andrews, the ‘Home of Golf’, on 25 and 26 August – all at Leeds Golf Centre wish them the very best of luck.

1. Don’t place a club on the ground before hitting your shots on the range. Pick a specific target, address the ball and then place a club on your toe line to see how accurate you were! Why make a perfect swing on the course if you’re aiming into the trees?
2. Colour your clubface in with permanent marker, hit 10 shots and observe the pattern of your striking. Take a picture and email it to mark@leedsgolfcentre.com for appraisal!
3. Alternate clubs and targets within your practice routine. Aiming at the same target time and again with the same club means your brain will switch off!

SCHOOL SUMMER HOLIDAY CAMP – LAST PLACES AVAILABLE
Just a quick reminder that as always, Leeds Golf Centre is hosting its tremendous value school holiday golf camps for juniors – enjoy the peace of mind knowing that your youngsters are in a safe and secure environment this summer!
At a cost of just £30 for day-long sessions, children can learn to play the greatest game on earth under the watchful eye of former Wike Ridge Golf Club junior captain and PGA Professional level 2 coach, Josh Hirst. The programme is open to all juniors aged from 5 to 16 – groups are selected according to age and ability where possible and numbers are limited to ensure that safety/tuition quality standards are maintained throughout the duration of each session.
Full day ‘Cadets’ camp (ages 5 to 10):
- Monday 6 August to Friday 10 August
- Monday 20 August to Friday 24 August
Full day ‘Masters’ camp (ages 11 to 16):
- Monday 27 August to Friday 31 August
All full day camps include lunch, snacks and a welcome pack /goodie bag; costs are £30 per day or £125 for the 5-day week (sessions run 10am to 4pm).

SWEET SUCCESS – AGAIN!
Nigel Sweet was unstoppable yet again last week, winning the Moor Allerton Classic and equalling his own course record in the process. Shooting a stunning 5-under 66 in the morning round, ‘Sweetie’ cruised to a 71 in the afternoon which proved good enough only to tie – of course, he held his nerve to win the sudden death play-off and claim his fifth title of the year.
“Not bad for an old boy,” said Nigel; we think it’s awesome!
