ABOUT POWERPLAY
Devised in 2009, PowerPlay Golf is a unique and exciting format that challenges the accepted 18-hole culture in favour of a more tactical, more dramatic and more interesting proposition that invariably affords more oncourse fun.
By reducing the typical round duration to just two hours (in our case over 12 holes), the format also facilitates competitive golf in a much more convenient fashion than is normal – in short, it’s golf’s answer to Twenty20 in cricket or five-a-side in football.
Two flags are sited on each green – one white (easy) and one black (hard). Each player has three opportunities in the first 11 holes to ‘take a PowerPlay’ before teeing off – double Stableford points are scored for a net birdie or better. However, beware the final PowerPlay hole where double points can be scored in the same way but where points are also subtracted for a net bogey or worse!
NB Leeds Golf Centre are operating a modified version of PowerPlay golf.
YOUR TEAM
Your team can be made up of many players throughout the season although four must be selected to represent your company at each league meeting. You may bring four different players to each match if you wish – the only stipulation is that your team MUST consist of at least one employee of your business and up to three guests. The only other condition is that all players must have a recognised club or society handicap – or at least be able to demonstrate that the handicap they propose is a fair and accurate reflection of their standard. Those who do not have official club or society handicaps will be liable to handicap adjustments made by the tournament administration on the basis of the scores they achieve during matches.
THE FORMAT
Your team will compete against 15 other companies for top honours. Four pools of four teams will be drawn randomly – matches will then be played in a league format where each team plays each other twice (6 matches in total). The four league winners will play 2 further matches on a knockout basis to decide the top four overall places – and The Leeds Corporate Golf League 2012 winner will be crowned!
Matches will be played in fourballs albeit on a singles ‘head-to-head’ basis - team captains will exchange their selected running order of four players at the first tee.
RULES AND SCORING
The PowerPlay Golf format uses a modified version of the widely-known Stableford scoring system – eg 1 point for a net bogey, 2 points for a net par, 3 points for a net birdie etc. However, bonus points are secured when electing a PowerPlay and scoring net birdie or better – apart from on the final hole when points are subtracted for a net bogey or worse!
Each head-to-head match will be played over the full 12-holes of our unique Oaks par-3 course – Stableford points totals will be calculated after the final hole before league points are awarded on the basis of 3 points for a singles match victory and just one point for a draw. Losing players will obviously be awarded no points.
As we are running a modified version of the PowerPlay Golf format, handicaps will be adjusted to accommodate not only the 12-hole format but also in recognition of all holes being par-3s. As such, players will receive ‘five eighths’ of their handicap as courtesy shots against par to be taken according to stroke indexes shown on the Leeds Corporate Golf League scorecard. For example, a player with a club or society handicap of 18 will receive ‘five eighths’ ie 11 shots.
