Winter Golf in Leeds: Your Questions Answered

Winter often raises lots of questions for golfers – especially if you’re newer to the game or thinking about getting started. At Leeds Golf Centre, we believe golf should be welcoming and enjoyable all year round, so we’ve answered the most common winter golf questions to help you make the most of the season.

Can you still play golf in winter in Leeds?

Yes – absolutely.

Golf doesn’t stop just because the temperature drops. Winter golf is all about adapting to the conditions, and at Leeds Golf Centre we do exactly that to make sure golfers can keep playing safely and comfortably.

We manage our courses carefully during colder months, using winter mats when required and adjusting play when conditions dictate. That means you still get to enjoy your golf, while we protect both the course and the people playing it.

Is winter golf safe?

Safety always comes first.

Frozen ground, slippery surfaces and hard turf can increase risk if not managed properly. That’s why we take a proactive approach during winter, making decisions that prioritise golfer wellbeing. Winter mats, temporary adjustments and occasional delays are all about making sure your time on the course is enjoyable and safe.

If you’re ever unsure, make sure you check BRS before you set off for your round of golf as we’ll update that as soon as we do our morning checks out on the course.

What if I don’t want to play on the course in winter?

That’s completely fine and there are plenty of other options to allow you to get your golfing fix in Leeds.

Winter is a great time to use the driving range and practice facilities instead. Our floodlit range means you can practise even when daylight is limited, and Toptracer technology makes practice more engaging, social and informative. What’s more, the driving range is open 7 days a week until 10pm meaning you can play golf at a time that suits you and your weekly routine.

For many golfers, winter becomes the season where confidence grows and bad habits are ironed out before spring arrives.

Is winter a good time for coaching?

It’s one of the best times.

With fewer distractions and less pressure to “play well,” winter lessons allow you to focus on improvement rather than scorecards. Whether you’re brand new to golf or looking to refine your technique, coaching during winter sets you up brilliantly for the year ahead.

Our coaching approach is supportive, friendly and tailored to the individual – no judgement, no intimidation. Leeds Golf Academy is based at Leeds Golf Centre and offers a huge choice of professional PGA coaches.

I’m new to golf – should I wait until spring to start?

There’s no need to wait.

In fact, starting in winter can be a great choice. Facilities are quieter, coaching availability is better, and you can learn at your own pace without feeling rushed. By the time spring arrives, you’ll feel more confident and ready to enjoy the course.

At Leeds Golf Centre, beginners are always welcome. The club offers a super welcoming environment with a team of professional coaches to help get your started on your golfing journey. The driving range is ideal for learning and then the Par3 The Oaks course is the perfect way to experience and practice out on the course.

Why choose Leeds Golf Centre over other golf clubs in Leeds?

Because we do things differently.

We’re proud to be one of the most welcoming and inclusive golf destinations in the region. There’s no dress code pressure, no old-school attitudes and no assumption that you need experience to belong here.

With two courses, a modern driving range, Toptracer technology, expert coaching and a friendly team, we offer more ways to enjoy golf than any traditional club. Whether you’re a regular golfer, an occasional player or completely new, you’ll find a place that feels comfortable and supportive.

What’s the best way to enjoy golf this January?

Play it your way.

That might mean a winter round on the course, a relaxed evening on the range, a coaching session to work on your swing, or simply popping in to see what golf is all about. There’s no pressure to do everything – just choose what works for you.
